Blame it on the Gain!

Education Week published this week that “Studies have found that summer break, if not actively managed, can be a period of learning loss that almost invariably accumulates over time” (Editorial Projects in Education, 2015). That’s some sour info, unless you’ve got a solution.

There are many organizations offering focused learning programs during the summer. From intensive reading & math to second language learning to writing & behavioral interventions – you can find a little of everything. BUT, did you catch the “key” statement in the quote above? A summer that is “actively managed” can bring about gains, and that means one that is balanced. Research supports project-based learning approaches among others, where “youth engage in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work and a final project or production” (bgca.org). In this way, kids are engaged in typical summer activities that integrate academic, social & thinking skills, equipping them for school & life success.

Light Up Learning offers exactly this in their dynamic summer camp program, this year titled “Oh, The Thinks You Think.” Providing thematic & practical project & game based learning, we’re making sure kids don’t experience brain drain, but instead blame the fun for their gain!
