Education is Relative?

Albert Einstein said, “The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.” It’s often stated that Einstein struggled in school (not accurate), though it should be obvious by now that he certainly learned. So how did he learn? A professor of mine recently shared how an “older” gentleman observed him during an educational therapy session with a high school student. After the session, the gentleman (who supposedly looked like Col. Sanders of KFC) said something like “It appears to me that you were teaching that young man to think.” He went on to recount specific examples of how this was being accomplished throughout the session. My shocked professor didn’t quite know how to respond and simply asked how he had come to his conclusion. The gentleman replied in a somber tone that teaching students to “think” was what he had spent his entire 50-year career studying! He had multiple doctorate degrees in education and years of practice in the field, but was saddened to see the “state of education” – which he felt got in the way of learning. This is what happened to Einstein! He was desperately curious and loved to think through the questions of life and science. But, a couple of his schools had strict standards which stiffled his abilities to move forward. We have gained so many new insights about learning styles and how the brain functions and changes. Einstein had it right…it’s all about how we learn that makes the biggest difference. As you consider education options for helping your children/students, consider the methods being used to teach them. Make sure they are able to “think” so they will truly learn and grow!
