that research indicates that students learn more when they are taught to pause and think through why they are doing each step in a math problem. Students don’t do as well when they develop a habit of trying steps randomly when they get frustrated or confused. Whether it’s math or other subject, understanding is key for long-term learning. Without analysis, evaluation or reflection, students will only temporarily “memorize” and later forget what they did. Especially those with learning difficulties, students benefit from understanding why certain processes are necessary. That way, they can apply those steps to subsequent problems. Now that you know, encourage your student to “stop and think,” before moving on!
